A Crown Stuck at Home, Is Still a Crown
There are four big international beauty pageants: Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Earth.
Of those four, Miss World is the oldest running, created 69 years ago in 1951 in the United Kingdom.
I didn't know a lot about beauty pageants. I was limited by references I'd seen in movies or on television. For example, I didn't know that Miss World doesn't have bikini contests anymore and that the competition involves physical challenges like shot put and long jump.
I also didn't know that there are significant differences between all beauty pageants.
Miss World is more competitive than Miss Universe, with Miss World having over 100 contestants and Miss Universe having anywhere between 80 and 100. In these types of contests, even one more girl makes a huge difference between getting the crown or not.
In short, winning the title of Miss World, is ... a big deal.
And something I find particularly interesting is that Miss World is all about young women finding a purpose in helping others. Their motto is "beauty with a purpose." When you sign up to be Miss World ... you're signing up to spend most of your time helping others. You can usually find these women helping raise money for building hospitals, hosting telethons, visiting orphanages in the poorer parts of the world, and giving their time to those who need it the most.
What happens when you're stuck at home and can no longer do these types of things in person?
To find out, I spoke with Stephanie Del Valle, Miss World 2016.
